Holiday Reading Roundup

December 21st, 2008

Those of you who gave me your addresses in the last post for a book, I’ll be mailing it out to you tomorrow.  Yay!

If you’re snowed in tonight, I have some holiday reading suggestions for you:

Kitsune: Rona treats us to one of her all-too-rare erotica posts for the holidays.  A gorgeous, evocative tale of winter — oh, and it’s pretty hot too.

Sex Geek is always brilliant.  Her latest in a series of reposts (thank goodness that content didn’t die locked up on Friendster!) is a rebuttal of anti-SM feminism.  She includes a link to a new-to-me study on the somewhat political topic of BDSM demographics.  (Here’s the study (in PDF). Check out page 26!  44.4% of women and 14.4% of men considered themselves “only a bottom” — far from a majority — but 48.6% of women and 65.1% of men thought there were more bottoms than anything else.  In-ter-est-ing.

Australia’s power couple Maymay and Eileen (who are once-and-hopefully-future NYC residents) are pioneering an innovative NYC event called Kinkforall.  Check it out, repost, and make space in your calendar for March!  I think it’s a fantastic idea.

Chelsea Summers of Pretty Dumb Things needs a photographer ASAP.  Can you help?

Sinclair Sexsmith of Sugarbutch Chronicles has a list of gift suggestions for the butch in your life.  I’m pretty damn girly, but I’d rather get any of her suggestions than makeup or lingerie.  Especially the ties, the cufflinks (I love menswear styling and French cuffs so much I’ve begun to sew my own dress shirts to fill their dearth in women’s wear) and the shaving kit.  I feel like shaving with a straight razor is a skill with so much potential.

Between the gloom-and-doom economy talk and the prospect of untold years of college debt, I’ve started paying a lot more attention to my finances. Turns out I really like feeling in control of things.  Who knew? Feminist Finance joined my feed reader this week (via Figleaf) and won me over starting with this series about intelligent consumption, including the care, of clothes.  I have been trying to fight the “tyranny of stuff” (with increasing success!) since moving to Manhattan, and my ongoing agenda in all areas of my life is not to work more, but to work smarter.

I’m on Twitter as MissCalico.  God, what’s next?  Myspace?

Original content forthcoming, too!  I am trying to break up a long-overdue post on sex work resources.  But first I am off to a holiday party with one of my roommates, from which (if you follow Twitter) there will be probably be a series of increasingly drunken texts.

Happy Holidays, folks. :)

Hey Calico, thanks for blogging about KinkForAll! Do you think you’re going to be able to make the New York City event in March? If so, please indicate your participation by adding your name to the KinkForAllNewYorkCity wiki page. I hope you can make it; I miss you and would love to say hi in person!

Thanks for the shout out. I’m so glad you liked it. I’m trying to get back into writing more erotica because writing breeds writing, and I need to get back to trying to sell fiction instead of just fact. Also, thanks for the links to the feminist finance blog. I just got sucked in for a good 10 posts – and subscribed to the feed.
