Sex work includes, but isn't limited to being involved in porn, stripping, phone sex operating, webcam modeling, escorting, giving live shows, always in exchange for something (like $$$$$ dolla dolla billls!!). Anything that falls under the sex industry, basically.

And that is a very personal question to ask, but you can pick up on some of the things she does from reading her blog.

I have been reading your journal now for some time, and have what may be an easy question, but would help clarify your writings for me.

When you say "Sex Worker" what does it encompass - what are the actual activities you mean it to include?

As a follow-up, and a little more personal, what are the activities you do that make you a sex worker?

Look a little closer, and you'll see that Craigslist is doing a shell game. They are closing "erotic services" and opening an "adult services" section under stricter rules and scrutiny.

And, as with any shell game, they always win. They look good in the eyes of the public, while making it more difficult for sex workers to practice their trade as openly and safely as possible. Not to mention the false sense of security -- and self-righteousness -- they provide for "the mainstream".

On the face of it maybe the Attorney General is dumb enough to think this will work.

I doubt it. I think Craigslist is just a relatively easy target to score political points off of. I'm always amazed and depressed by how well that sort of showy but ultimately counterproductive bullshite plays to the rubes, though.

The Today Show just did its own Craigslist "sting" with hidden cameras. They even showed the faces of the women they "caught." NBC claims they're doing it to "protect the women from themselves" but really they're just peddling salacious content to drive corporate profits. NBC eviscerates women's privacy and personal safety by nonconsensually outing them to the world, all the while donning a smile and a smug sense of superiority. Someone should really save Matt Lauer from himself.

[...] The Craigslist shutdown is not the answer « MissCalico: blog "It’s true that Craigslist is a major advertising venue, for prostitutes but also sex workers of all kinds: the largest in the nation. Its loss will have a distinct effect on the people who use it. Here’s how it works: we advertise to attract the clients we want, and screen to eliminate the clients we don’t, but the number of clients we need stays the same. Anything that hurts our methods of attracting clients, like the shutdown of Erotic Services, will affect how stringent our screening can afford to be. It’s pretty clear to me that Craigslist has just made its sex workers more marginalized and more at risk." (tags: craigslist sexwork sexworkersrights news) [...]

AG's are pretty much only going to do the bidding of the majority of their constituents in cases like this, no? It's far easier (and popular of course) for an attorney general to tell the outraged and fearful populace that these measures are the correct course, than it is to try to turn the people's prejudices about sex work around, or actually work harder to protect a seemingly unpopular subset of the population. Very very sad, and frustrating, and counter productive...but oh so typical. Grrrr.

This isn't even likely to work. Sex workers who advertise on craigslist will probably just post in other sections, as they did before craigslist started the erotic services section. So, instead of the ads being seen only by those who ask to see them (and corded off into a section that parents could install filters to block), they will now be seen by everyone, including people with no interest in hiring a sex worker. What an improvement!
I don't get this crusade against advertising sex work on the Internet-would the authorties rather sex workers solicit on the street? Would that really be an improvement?
